HOSC 2006: keynote Eben Moglen
June 18 2006, 20:01In English In his keynote (~35min) at the Holland Open Software Conference 2006, Eben Moglen, lawyer of the Free Software Foundation talks about the drafting process of GPLv3 and the philosophy behind it.
He also speaks about the retirement of Bill Gates as chairman of Microsoft and the implications which this decision will have.
In the keynote several references to ‘thursday’ are made: this stands for the discussion on Licenses and DRM at HOSC.
Later this week we will publish the second part of this session, in which Eben Moglen answers questions of the audience.

Fosdem 2006: Debian
June 15 2006, 19:46In English We talk with Wouter Verhelst, developer of the Debian project. Debian is a popular GNU/Linux distribution that is available for many different architectures. It is also used as the basis of many other distributions.
We also talk about the development cycle of debian. The last debian release took three years and was released in june 2005. The next version called Etch is projected to be released in december 2006.
Fosdem 2006: BSD
June 5 2006, 18:00In english We talk with Daniel Seuffert about BSD. Several flavours of bsd were represented in a joint BSD booth: openbsd, freebsd, netbsd and miros. Daniel is representative of the FreeBSD project and among other things talks about the different operating systems that are build on top of freebsd. For instance, there are two distributions called pcbsd and desktopbsd that are targetted towards desktop users. There also is a version that specializes on security entitled trustedbsd.
For people who want to try out BSD, there is live cd based on freebsd called FreeSBIE.
Fosdem 2006: Mysql
June 4 2006, 17:01In English We talk with David Axmark of Mysql AB. Mysql is the mostly used open source database. David talks about the database market and the recents acquisitions of Oracle in this field. David also addresses the qualities of the mysql database and the status of his company.
Holland Open: Rob Peters
June 3 2006, 14:55We spreken (~8min) met Rob Peters. Hij reflecteert op de Holland Open Source Conferentie uit 2005 en benoemt de hoofdpunten van de komende conferentie op 15 tot 17 juni in Amsterdam.
Het programma ziet er interessant uit en ook de sprekerslijst is indrukwekkend met o.a.: Chikai Ohazama (mede-oprichter Google Earth), Jimbo Wales (oprichter Wikipedia), Eben Moglen (advocaat van de Free Software Foundation), Tristan Nitot (oprichter en directeur van Mozilla Europe), James Baty (CTO en vice-president Sun) en Erik Josefsson (president FFII Zweden).
Aanmelden voor de aankomende conferentie kan online en via een webcast kan men de conferentie uit 2005 terugzien.
FSB: Covide - Open Source CRM
June 3 2006, 13:25We spreken (~14min) met Michiel en Nancy van Baak, partners en collega’s bij Covide. Covide is een commerciële onderneming dat een gelijknamig open source CRM pakket aanbied. In het eerste gedeelte van het interview gaan met name in op het pakket zelf. Het tweede gedeelte gaat vooral over de wijze waarop Covide samenwerkt met de open source community en het door Covide gehanteerde bedrijfsmodel.
De broncode van het CRM systeem is beschikbaar op sourceforge. Ook zijn er diverse demomogelijkheden.
FSB: PGP
June 1 2006, 9:34Joost van Baal geeft ons een korte cursus PGP. PGP is een manier om email te ondertekenen en te encrypten. Op deze manier waarborg je je privacy: derden kunnen dan niet zonder jouw toestemming jouw persoonlijke emails lezen.
Zoals gezegd kan voor PGP gebruik worden gemaakt van de meeste mailclients, zoals kmail of evolution. Voor thunderbird is een plug-in beschikbaar genaamd Enigmail. In alle gevallen is GnuPG vereist is.
Ook zonder eigen PGP key kan men dan PGP ondertekende mail van derden geauthenticeren en kan versleutelde mail worden verzonden naar mensen die wel over een PGP key beschikken. Hoe zelf aan de slag te gaan met PGP is toegelicht in de handleiding GnuPG in 5 minuten howto.
De organisatie CAcert biedt een alternatief voor het web of trust zoals dat gebruikt wordt bij PGP. Bij deze organisatie kan men zowel een PGP key als een X.509 certificaat aanmaken. Het X.509 certificaat is zowel voor S/MIME (voor het ondertekenen en encrypten van e-mail) als voor SSL (voor versleuteld client-server verkeer) te gebruiken.
