Fosdem 2006: Debian

In English We talk with Wouter Verhelst, developer of the Debian project. Debian is a popular GNU/Linux distribution that is available for many different architectures. It is also used as the basis of many other distributions.

We also talk about the development cycle of debian. The last debian release took three years and was released in june 2005. The next version called Etch is projected to be released in december 2006.

Fosdem 2006: BSD

In english We talk with Daniel Seuffert about BSD. Several flavours of bsd were represented in a joint BSD booth: openbsd, freebsd, netbsd and miros. Daniel is representative of the FreeBSD project and among other things talks about the different operating systems that are build on top of freebsd. For instance, there are two distributions called pcbsd and desktopbsd that are targetted towards desktop users. There also is a version that specializes on security entitled trustedbsd.

For people who want to try out BSD, there is live cd based on freebsd called FreeSBIE.

Fosdem 2006: Mysql

In English We talk with David Axmark of Mysql AB. Mysql is the mostly used open source database. David talks about the database market and the recents acquisitions of Oracle in this field. David also addresses the qualities of the mysql database and the status of his company.

Fosdem 2006: Mozilla Europe

In English A new interview in our Fosdem 06 series. We talked (~10min) with Tristan Nitot, President of Mozilla Europe. Throughout the interview Tristan emphasizes the importance of choice and innovation on the internet.

Topics include: the different Mozilla products, the influence Mozilla has had on IE7, the importance of the support for extentions, the incorporation into the Mozilla Corporation and the power of the platform independant Mozilla user interface language XUL which is now also used by other projects as well, for instance democracy.

Fosdem 2006: Richard Stallman

In English In this interview we talk with Richard Stallman, the keynote speaker at Fosdem 2006. Richard Stallman is the founder of the Free Software Foundation and the GNU project.

We talk briefly about the drafting process of the upcoming version of the GNU GPL (reports of GPL-v3 related events). Then Richard talks about a whole range of issues that are very much relevant to free and open source software and user freedom in general, namely Digital Rights/Restrictions Management, CRAP, software patents, and HDTV.

Fosdem 2006: Jeroen Baten

In dit interview (~16min) spreken we met Jeroen Baten. Jeroen is op tal van manieren bezig met open source. Hij heeft veel geschreven over dit onderwerp, waaronder cursusmateriaal voor het Linux Professional Institute en een boek over open source bij de overheid. Ook is hij actief binnen de Open Source Business Club (OSBC) en Vereniging Open Source Nederland (VOSN).

Jeroen geeft inzicht in doelstellingen en activiteiten van deze laatste twee verenigingen. Ook geeft hij ruime toelichting op waarom de VOSN opgaat in Holland Open. Ook gaan we in op de markt en de bedrijfsmodellen rond open source, een thema waar Holland Open binnenkort een avond aan wijdt.

Fosdem 2006: Gnome

In English. We spreken met Jeff Waugh van de Gnome desktop in het kader van de nieuwe 2.14 release. Jeff is emeritus release manager van het project en tevens verbonden aan de Ubuntu distributie.

We spreken kort over Linus Torvalds en zijn veelbesproken opmerkingen over de Human Interface Guidelines van Gnome. Ook spreken we over GDesklets, Mono en de concurrentie van Microsoft Vista.

Fosdem 2006: Flock

In English. In dit interview spreken we met Zbigniew Braniecki. Hij is lid van de board of directors van Mozilla Europe en ontwikkelaar van Flock. In dit interview (~10min) spreken we over de ambities van het jonge Flock project. Een belangrijk doel is een naadloze integratie met webdiensten zoals Flickr, blogger, del.icio.us.

Zbigniew is bescheiden over de huidige status van het project en wil geen valse verwachtingen wekken. Het project biedt op dit moment een developer preview en gewone stervelingen worden gevraagd te wachten tot versie 1.0.
